Places of interest and cultural sites in downtown Salerno

Salerno combines age-old monuments, artistic masterpieces and spectacular views in a compact and lively historic center. By staying at the B&B Meraviglia you can walk to the city's most iconic attractions, immersing yourself in its Longobard, medieval and Baroque history.

Salerno Cathedral

The spiritual heart of the city, St. Matthew's Cathedral is the symbol of Salerno. Its Romanesque architecture, majestic bell tower and striking crypt guard centuries of history and art in a timeless atmosphere in the heart of the historic center.

Minerva's garden

An ancient medieval botanical garden linked to the tradition of the Salerno Medical School, it dominates the city with panoramic terraces and paths among medicinal plants. A unique place where nature, science and history meet.

Arechi Castle

Perched on Mount Bonadies, it offers one of the most spectacular views of the Gulf of Salerno and the Coast. A Longobard fortress and symbol of the city, it tells the story of Prince Arechi II and Salerno's medieval origins.

Giuseppe Verdi Theater

An elegant 19th-century theater overlooking near the waterfront, it is the city's main cultural hub. It hosts opera seasons, concerts and performances in a refined and historic setting.

Monumental Complex of St. Sophia

Built in the late 10th century as Salerno's first Benedictine monastery, it is now a prestigious space dedicated to events, exhibitions and cultural events. It has hosted exhibitions by internationally renowned artists such as Picasso, Mirò, Caravaggio, Warhol and Pierluigi Nervi.

St. Peter's Court

Rising in the 8th century as the chapel of the ducal palace commissioned by Prince Arechi II, it stands on an area that preserves early Christian traces and Roman bath structures. In the 18th century it was the site of the delivery of the parchments of the famous Salerno Medical School. Today it holds unique archaeological excavations, visible to the public and of extraordinary historical value.

Church of St. George

Considered the most beautiful Baroque church in Salerno, it is located a short walk from the cathedral. Founded in the 8th century and renovated in the 17th century, it holds rich and striking decorations. After the 1980 earthquake, frescoed apsidal remains from before the 10th century re-emerged under the current floor, now visible thanks to an innovative system that raises the floor.

Fornelle Ward

One of the city's oldest and most authentic neighborhoods, established in the 9th century probably around the church of Santa Trofimena. Originally inhabited by Amalfitan merchants, it was known for the production of ceramics: the name "Fornelle" may derive precisely from the ancient kilns in the area. Today it is a charming blend of colorful alleys, urban art and tradition.

Salerno is a city to be experienced by walking slowly through medieval alleys, hidden courtyards and glimpses of the sea, where every corner tells a thousand-year history. ✨
